Compared to a single engine aircraft the P-38 had essentially three fuselages- two booms and one cockpit "gondola". It also had a complex assortment of scoops and vents for the radiators and oil coolers, and two induction scoops. As the airplane also had a 52-foot wingspan there was potential for a considerable amount of drag.
